Grand Bend Ontario

Grand Bend is a community of over 2,000 people, situated on the shores of Lake Huron in Lambton County. Formerly known as Brewster’s Mills, Websterville, and Sommerville, Grand Bend got its current name from early French-Canadian settlers. They referred to the area as “Aux Croches,” which translates to “at the bends.”

Located on the traditional territory of the Attawandaron and Ojibwe/Chippewa First Nations, Grand Bend was ceded to the Crown in 1829. The village was an isolated lumbering community until a highway opened to the neighbouring town of Goderich in 1850. This was when the villagers of Grand Bend could seek new economic opportunities rather than relying exclusively on the forests for their livelihood.
